Previously known as “Madras,” the city has a flourishing Dravidian culture and is home to gorgeous beaches, the Tamil film Industry and numerous temples. With MTT’s tour packages in Chennai, experience the city to the maximum.

Madraspatnam

The history of the city is closely associated with that of the British Rule in India. The land, on which Chennai stands today, was obtained on rent by Francis Day on behalf of the East of India Company. The region obtained on lease was primarily a fishing hamlet known as “Madraspatnam”. The company went on to build Fort St. George, the first major British Settlement in India, near the village of “Madraspatnam” around which the city grew.

The city became capital of Madras State (renamed as Tamil Nadu in 1969) after India gained Independence. In line with nationwide trend of using less anglicised names, the city was officially renamed as Chennai on 17 July 1996.
